I have chosen Fast Five as my film to study, and in that film l have chosen the stealing the safe scene to analyse because l feel that is a scene where a lot of tension and suspense has been built up and it is also the climax of the story. Here is what l could depict, analyse, connote from aspects of the scene such as the mise-en-scene.
In this scene from Fast Five, lots of high-key lighting was used to show who the hero were in the movie. Even though they was stealing they were the good guys, the hero's because they were stealing something that did not belong to that person, this was shown because lots of natural light to make the scene bright and colourful. This portrays the characters as very strong and brave and as they are not scared but they are also very intimidating. The lighting also kind of portrays them in a good way, when you look at it, you think wow they are the real hero's in the movie and it just shows you from another angle because we see them as just ordinary people who have families but they also get shown in the light as people who fight for what's fair and what they believe in. In this scene, the setting is in the street of Rio, in Brazil. This type of setting was used because the scene has a lot of action going on with car chases and safe's crashing and smashing stuff and. Some cars were in pursuit of other such as the police cars. This portrays suspense because they are in another country and they don't really know the area that well, so your kind of on the edge of your seats to see if they will make it out even though not knowing the streets. This portrays to the audience that if police car is in pursuit of another vehicle then maybe a crime has been committed or something has gone terribly wrong and there for they are being chased for that reason. The slums almost like a maze which makes the atmosphere very tense because you don't know how they are going to escape. This scene in particular had a lot of facial expression because it was the climax of the movie and you didn't really know what was going to happen. The characters facial expression were really tense and it kind of made you feel that way too and sometimes you feel as if you are in their shoes and your experiencing what they are going through and you kind of feel a buzz of adrenaline this was shown on the bridge part of the scene you didn't really know if Domanic was really going to get rid of all the police and he seemed to be trapped but in the end he came out on top to be the hero. Also when you look at their facial expressions it makes you feel nervous, anxious and agitated because their facial expressions don't give a lot away about what's about to happen. The camera angles in this scene consisted of close up to really show what emotions the character were experiencing and going through at that moment. There were low-angle shots being presented to emphasise what exactly it was that the main characters were dragging and they were showing how heavy it is and how large it is as well, also a low- angle shot suggests that the character is powerful and they are dominant characters. Also there was a lot of long shots being shown to show the whole setting and the characters in that setting. A high-angle shot was taken also to show how inferior the characters were and how they were weak and helpless. |
